Introduction to the Liturgy – Your Savior Comes – These words from Isaiah, read in the mass for Christmas morning, capture the flavor of all the readings selected for this feast. Selections from the book of Isaiah figure prominently in all the Christmas masses in announcing the dawn of new era. The second readings today draw on Titus and Hebrews in accenting the arrival of God’s salvation in the person of Jesus and anticipating his return at the end of history. Luke’s infancy narratives are important interpretative statements on the meaning of the Christ event. In the first two masses of Christmas, Luke does this in story form; in the third mass, the prologue to john’s gospel speaks of this saving moment in the highest theological terms: the Word of God has become flesh and has dwelt among us.

From the Saints From a sermon by Saint Leo the Great, pope– Dearly beloved, today our Savior is born; let us rejoice. Sadness should have no place on the birthday of life. The fear of death has been swallowed up; life brings us joy with the promise of eternal happiness.
