MESSAGE FROM FATHER JIM

Welcome back to St. Columbkille’s Cathedral and our regularly scheduled masses.

In your prayers kindly remember the sick and those who care for them, the lonely, the handicapped, those isolated, and those who have died especially Gladys Boczar.

Theme for August 9th – A Peaceful Presence.  The first book of kings relates the story of Elijah’s finding God in the “sounds of silence.”  In today’s gospel, the apostles experience Christ’s steadying hand on storm-tossed waters as a calm and reassuring presence.  In the letter to the Romans, Paul grieves deeply over his separation from his Jewish brothers and sisters, the people through whom God first spoke to the world.

Catholic Women’s League

National Catholic Women`s League President Anne-Marie Gorman has arranged an on-line Summer Speakers Series, from August 10th to August 14th,  a focus on Care for Our Common Home, Women in the Church, and League of the Future.  To participate, CWL Members can register online, by going to the National Website: CWL.ca and click on “Summer Speaker Series Registration,” found under “Quick Links”.  Each speaker is listed by date and time.  Once completed and submitted, the member will receive a confirmation of their registration via email.  Those wishing to join, must register for each speaker separately.  We hope all CWL Members are healthy safe.

A Whisper in the Silence: I have sought God in many ways over the course of my life.  I searched in the busyness and “doing” of my life, hoping that if I worked hard enough, I might be loved.   I cried out in times of sickness and confusion, hoping I might be heard.  I have no doubt that God has seen and heard me.  But this ancient story of the prophet Elijah, in our first reading today, reminds us that sometimes the best way  to find God, is just the opposite of our kicking, screaming, doing and crying.  Very often, the most direct way to God is in the silence “at the back of the cave.”  We need to retreat from the noise, lower our voices and be quiet enough to hear the voice that whispers, “Here I am.”

Masks mandatory in Renfrew County beginning the week of July 13

Non-surgical masks become mandatory in certain enclosed spaces (including churches) in Renfrew County the week of June 13th. Exceptions include very young children and people with respiratory problems. Medical authorities are asking everyone to be kind to people who are not wearing a mask. They may have a valid reason for not wearing one.
